Puustelli Kitchens Celebrates 10 years of ecological kitchens

October 2023

Fourteen years ago, Puustelli set out to reinvent the kitchen cabinet, on a mission to create more environmentally friendly furniture. The focus was to create cabinetry that would become the most ecological, sustainable kitchen possible over its entire lifecycle. Exactly ten years ago, based on years of research and development, Puustelli launched ‘Miinus’ a new kitchen cabinetry line where any materials needlessly affecting the environment and indoor air quality have been removed.

The signature hallmark of the Miinus line is the reimagined structure of the kitchen cabinet; instead of the traditional box, Puustelli created a biocomposite frame with pre-drilled holes for door, panel and shelf attachments. The biocomposite frame removes the need for a “fourth wall” and opens up a whole new world of kitchen design opportunities.

In honor of the 10 year anniversary, Puustelli Kitchens is hosting a Showroom Open House event on Saturday October 7th, 2023.

Artful Living features Andrew Zimmern’s new Puustelli kitchen

Artful Living Editor-in-Chief Kate Nelson visits Chef Andrew Zimmern in his newly renovated home in Minneapolis. Perhaps best known for his Bizarre Foods and Magnolia Network “Family Dinner” TV shows, Chef Zimmern opens up about his “less is more” life philosophy while sharing pieces of his kitchen “must haves” list that he’s documented over the years – including sustainably made cabinetry that fits all the tools of a top chef:

“For cabinetry, he opted for sleek Scandinavian brand Puustelli for its sustainability and customization, which was key since storage became scarce as kitchen walls came down. “We’re really thrilled with the Puustelli organization system,” he raves. “It’s amazing how it fits all of our stuff.”

Midwest Home Magazine showcases Puustelli USA kitchen

May 2021

We often don’t associate the word “elegant” with “accessible” but this 3,000 square foot rambler style home in Golden Valley, Minnesota proves that accessible design can indeed be elegant. Midwest Home Magazine recently interviewed the home owners and Anna Juola, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Puustelli USA, to share more about the key features in this ADA compliant and wheelchair-friendly kitchen.

“The two connected with Puustelli USA, a Finnish company specializing in eco-luxury cabinets, to design and remodel their new home. After first swapping carpet out for hardwood floors, stripping off wallpaper, and freshening up walls with new paint, the team was finally ready to tackle the kitchen. The goal was to make the space as convenient as possible for the couple without sacrificing any style.

“I have a background in industrial and product design, and I really hate when accessible design looks like accessible design,” Jill says. “There are so many cool products for people with disabilities, but they tend to look so tacky. Puustelli knew that and made it a point right out of the gate—they said, ‘This needs to be a place where, if you ever sell it, people look at it and think it’s just an awesome space and usable for anyone, not specifically designed for someone with a disability.’””

New! Puustelli launches water-resistant bathroom cabinetry line

 March 2020

Puustelli announces the launch of a unique biocomposite furniture system that eliminates moisture problems usually seen in bathroom furniture. Most bathroom fittings typically have a medium-density fibreboard (MDF) or particleboard frame, both of which have poor moisture resistance. The Puustelli bathroom biocomposite frame can fully withstand water and comes with a 30-year guarantee. This product innovation, originally developed in Finland, is now also available in North America exclusively through Puustelli USA.

“We’re really excited to add these new water-resistant bathroom products to our range of cabinetry offerings,” said Anna Juola, Co-Founder of Puustelli USA. “We’ve had several requests for the design and installation of cabinetry in spaces beyond the kitchen, including bathrooms. At Puustelli, our products represent more than just sleek European style – the safety of our materials and the functionality of our cabinetry is the most important thing we can offer our clients.”

The ecological cabinetry solution

The Puustelli bathroom furniture frames feature a biocomposite structure made by injection moulding. The biocomposite is a mixture of polypropylene and chemical pulp fibre, which makes the frame water-resistant, non-toxic, ecological and dust-resistant.

Once a traditional frame made from conventional furniture board has absorbed moisture, it can no longer be repaired and must be disposed of and replaced. The Puustelli biocomposite frame however, is a fully reusable and made of recyclable material. Any waste raw material originating in the manufacturing process of the Puustelli biocomposite frame can be efficiently reused.

No toxic glues or fumes

The Puustelli biocomposite frame contains no formaldehyde. This is an important distinction because panel materials typically used in bathroom fittings contain formaldehyde. If the panel structure of traditional fittings is even slightly damaged, dangerous formaldehyde vapors are released into the indoor air and the impact of moisture only multiplies the harmful effects.

Smart design characteristics

Unlike traditional frame materials, the Puustelli bioframe doesn’t tire of modification or being moved. The precise dimensional accuracy, fittings, and materials make it possible for the frame to be relocated without the screw fastenings becoming fatigued.

The bioframes of the washbasin cupboards have been designed for careful use of space, making the frame perfect for use in both large and small spaces. Plumbing has also been taken into account so that if necessary, can easily be accessed at a later time.

FACC Minnesota profiles Puustelli USA

June 2020

FROM STARTUP TO SCALEUP

The Finnish American Chamber of Commerce Minnesota recently featured Puustelli USA in their June newsletter, sharing the following news with their members:

Puustelli USA opened its new showroom in the beautiful uptown location close to the lakes Bde Maka Ska and Lake of the Isles in 2017. While we celebrate our 5th year in the USA, this year marks the 100-year anniversary for the Group back in Finland. We have now sold 400 kitchens locally which serves as a proof of concept. At this point we want to thank those numerous pioneers that have contributed to this success story so far. Opening a new market is probably never a linear line of growth and it hasn’t been that for Puustelli USA either. We just reconnected with a customer who said they are delighted daily when walking into their new kitchen they love! Starting something new is one of the most difficult things you can choose to do but stories like theirs keep us going.

Puustelli USA started as a general contractor providing turnkey remodeling projects. While it was a very important part of our path, this operation was scaled down in 2019 to make room for becoming a partner for Design Build companies wanting to incorporate Puustelli kitchens into their portfolio. As part of our strategy, we are now interviewing companies wanting to become regional Puustelli professionals and ambassadors. We want to be the best partner for those companies that share the same values and interested in providing sustainably built product with uncompromising design, functionality and quality.

We are very excited (or as a Finn would say, quite excited ;)) to turn the page to open our portfolio of next generation products and timeless design for partners to build their businesses on. We will be introducing our first Puustelli partners later this year and looking forward to expanding the local presence of Puustelli cabinetry.

Puustelli’s Finland Factory to Save Energy With New Solar Panels

January 2018

The Puustelli factory will have 150 solar panels for energy saving. Starting February 2018, there will be enough daylight to start using this solar panel system. Many people may think that there’s not enough natural sunlight in Finland for the solar panel system to operate, but there actually is because of Finland’s notoriously long summer days. Compensation happens when it gets dark again. In Scandinavia, from mid-May until the end of July, we have the privilege of enjoying daylight days and nights before the darkness takes over again. These panels can gather energy with full power for approximately 900 hours in a year while not competing with wind power, which rotates turbines throughout all hours — even in the dark. With this solar system, the Puustelli factory will save 40K Kwh of energy, which is equivalent to the amount of energy that it takes to power two 3-bedroom houses for one year.  This emphasis on energy savings is fitting for a factory who produces all their cabinetry with respect to their ecological values.
